As we are a prevention oriented dental practice, our aim is for you to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Tooth decay (caries) and gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) are caused by bacteria that live in the plaque that forms around the teeth and gums.
Research has shown that there are links between oral health and systemic disease including stroke, heart disease, diabetes and more recently alzheimers.
So looking after your teeth and gums not only helps you keep your teeth but may ensure that you live a longer, healthier life!
Dentists used to do everything but we now have hygienists who are specially trained in oral hygiene including:
- Cleaning teeth
- Conservative periodontal treatment
- Instruction in brushing and flossing
- Dietary advice for reducing and controlling tooth decay and gum disease
- Maintaining hygiene, especially in cosmetic and implant restored cases.
Where periodontal disease has progressed beyond management by conservative means, referral to a periodontist is essential.
